If you were to apply for the role you encompass now, would you get the job?
Would you be able to show that you have the skill sets, the vision, the strategic planning ability to allow you to step into the role that you may have through accident?
Would you apply for the role that you currently have?
A lot of leaders, particularly those in a Family Business, end up in a leadership role often more by accident than design. This may be down to them taking a leadership role and thus paving the way for their eventual role, or it may be that they reluctantly do they job because there is no one else to do it.
Even if you are exactly where you want to be; can you prove you are the best candidate?
I recently wrote a job specification to recruit a new member of the team and the department manager has forwarded me a few CV’s for this role. It got me thinking; if I wrote a job specification for my role – would my application immediately jump out as the best?
It will be an interesting exercise – and one I have scheduled in my diary.
After all; who better to challenge than myself?
